The conflict that the FBI had hoped to exploit rapidly intensified a few days later. On July 3, a UPI reporter covering the Los Angeles courthouse filed this item: “Elijah Muhammad, 67-year-old leader of the Black Muslim movement, today faced paternity suits from two former secretaries.… Miss [Lucille] Rosary and [Evelyn] Williams charged they had intimacies with Elijah Muhammad from 1957 until this year.”71
The next day, a group of FOI soldiers arrived at the Harlem mosque under the command of Gill of the Boston mosque and John X of Mosque No. 13 in Springfield. Joseph had been expecting Gill, since after the rally many Muslims were eager to be the ones to kill Malcolm X in order to please the Messenger. Joseph’s failure to carry out the execution had led to his demotion, and Gill had replaced him as the Muslims’ overseer on the East Coast. “They were calling us punks and sissies,” Thomas 15X Johnson recalled, because Joseph and the Harlem FOI men failed to murder Malcolm X in the days following the Messenger’s tirade.72 After they arrived, Gill went to talk to Ameer and asked him where they could get a silencer. Ameer said he didn’t know. When they left, he got in touch with Malcolm X and gave him the news. Later that evening, a group from the Harlem mosque devised a plan to please their “divine leader and teacher.”
Malcolm X was working at home that evening, with a babysitter in the house to watch the children. At around ten o’clock, he decided to go outside and move his car from in front of his home to a less conspicuous location. He suspected that NOI members would attempt to kill him after the sex scandal became public, and he was right. He showed the babysitter how to operate his rifle. After he was sure she understood, he opened the front door and peered outside. Satisfied that the coast was clear, he dashed toward his car, opened the door quickly, and revved the engine. But before he could get out of the parking space, two men he recognized as enforcers from the Harlem mosque approached the car and tried to open the front door on the driver’s side. Malcolm quickly locked the door and drove away. He circled the block a couple of times, each time looking at his front door to make sure the enforcers were not there. The door was just as he had left it, and there were no signs that the pursuers had entered his home. On the third cycle Malcolm parked the car down the street from his home, went back inside, and called the police emergency number. After taking a statement from Malcolm and the babysitter, they left.73
On July 5, Raymond Sharrieff and John Ali held a press conference on Elijah Muhammad’s behalf to refute reports that he had fornicated with his secretaries:
We hereby give answer to the false charges made against our leader … by evil-saying two former secretaries, namely Evelyn Williams and Lucille Rosary.
